Over the years I've done a few half marathons and raised money for charities in the process and after having a couple of years away from running I was talked into signing up for the "Tough Mudder" event my mates said it would be a laugh - they lied. Basically Tough Mudder is a half marathon course with obstacles along the way, sounds easy right ? But until you've done a Tough Mudder you can have no real idea of just how tough it is, how cold and wet you will be from the very start and also no real concept of just how much mud would be involved. Last weekend was my turn to accept the challenge, Tough Mudder is all about the challenge not about your own finishing time which is just as well as I was one of the slowest out there. Held at the gorgeous Cholmondeley Castle on a pleasant November weekend the course is designed by special forces and they are evil people !! Leg sapping mud miles early on and two electric shock obstacles, plenty of ice cold water along the way all mount up to a truly worth while challenge. Like any event, fancy dress is encouraged and my running buddy Rick decided that underpants on the outside of his shorts was the order of the day. So the highlights for me....The ice bath early on ( called the Arctic Enema ! ) was a shock to the system, followed by Walking the plank a 15ft drop into cold water. Mile after mile of mud through the woods. Just when you've started to warm up again from the running they give you another ice cold water obstacle. This course was truly relentless. They save the best 'til last though ""Electro Shock Therapy". A bigger version of a obstacle we had already done a few miles ago. So you have the knowledge that this as going to hurt, you are going to get electrocuted but the finish line is meters away. See I told you they were evil ! Here's a YouTube video showing you the last obstacle. It sill makes me twitch looking at it !
When the official photos come out I will post an update with a link if I'm recognisable and they aren't too embarrassing ! For now here are a couple of snaps taken on my phone before we started. I should have taken a couple after the event but honestly I couldn't feel my fingers anymore and walking was a problem. You can still donate to my Just Giving page as we are raising money for McMillan Cancer support http://www.justgiving.com/mark-byrne2 Would I do it again ? Absolutely !! I'm already planning next years event, who's with me ? Anyone ?....
Yes Rick actually wore that all the way round...
Berlin walls.
